The Ripples of a
Simple Question
It started out with a question – what have you been doing this week?
I told John I was doing some admin and preparatory work for our Benin LIFE trip. Our conversation centred around the trip and how GAiN’s (Global Aid Network) Water for Life Initiative seeks to help provide safe drinking water to villagers in rural Benin. A team would be going to Benin from 16-26 October to help install deep capped wells, help construct churches, share the message of the cross through mime and show the Jesus Film.
The following week, John approached me again and said that during the week, God has put it in his heart to sponsor a full water well and church construction. He sent the required funds the week after. His compassion, obedience and immediate action to what he felt God was leading him to do is truly inspiring.
That was not the end of it. That conversation was in July. A few weeks later, John told me about a free classical concert he was planning to put on with his friends in October. As a gifted musician and teacher, John, along with friends, would present a concert in Harrow and request a voluntary retiring collection at the end of the concert. Donations were for much-needed building work at Christ Church Roxeth and GAiN’s Water for Life Initiative.
October came and the concert day arrived. It was a sight to see. Having put in a lot of effort into preparation and practise, John, Alison, Adrienne, James, Henry and the Christ Church Chamber Choir presented a varied programme of Baroque, Classical, Jazz and Film music plus a new, original composition.
The church was full with 140 people enjoying the sounds of the piano, violins, trumpet and voices. The standard of music was similar to what one would hear in a London recital. The audience gave generously afterwards, and donations reached £1222.
It’s amazing what a simple question can do and where it can lead. “What have you been doing this week?” has led to an entire village getting a deep capped well and the construction of a new church. It has also led to an event where further donations were raised and an opportunity for people to get involved in helping provide safe drinking water for a better future.
Where will your next question lead you to?

What a wonderful article – such good news to hear when the world is in a sorry state. It was a real privilege to take part in the concert a few weeks ago. Something I had always aimed for in retirement (am not quite retired yet!) – to use my music to raise money for charity. Am very pleased to have supported such a worthy cause.
