Refugee Crises in Greece

Huge Donation from The South African Congregation

What a strange year. It was a year of isolation. A year where we were distracted from familiar things, everyday habits, our normal movements, our friends and even family. It has been a year of reflection about what is really necessary and important.

As many of you probably did, we as a family used the time for a good “spring clean”. I literally threw out everything we didn’t use. From bedding – to the towels that are still in their packaging. Clothes that once fitted – many, many years ago… to the children’s toys they do not play with.

We sorted everything out and packed it in boxes. It was “brutal”, and Andre had some anxious moments as I sorted out.

It was liberating to get rid of everything and I realized the abundance we have. It made me think of the refugees and how they had to flee with only what they could carry. Everything that is known, everything that is “normal”, loved ones, friends… everything to look for a better, safe place.

This led to my next mission, packing boxes for refugees. Usually we pack boxes during one worship service at Loughton congregation. This year the whole COVID “lock-down” hampered us a bit, but like our family, many other families cleaned up and threw out. I sent a lot of text messages to everyone, church members, friends and school moms. The feedback was incredible. Within days, our spare room was overflowing. Hearts and hands opened, and donations poured in.

Due to COVID we had to pack the boxes ourselves. Frikkie showed up with 60 boxes and I could see he was sceptical if we would fill it up.

The big pack day has begun. Marelize and Heidi came to help, and we sorted and packed the heaps and heaps of clothes. We discovered muscles we never knew existed. We filled box after box. Andre always brought something to drink and snack. We gratefully sent 81 boxes and 30 bags with Brian to GAiN.

Henre asked me why we do this – why do we give toys to the children? Why don’t they ask Jesus and Santa for it? The answer is simple. Not everyone believes in Jesus or Santa Claus, but Jesus uses us to do his work. We show His love for others by giving and opening our hearts. And for the kids who do not believe in Santa Claus… well you are his elves and he use you to make other kids’ hearts happy with a new toy.

Thanks to everyone who helped, who contributed, and helped pack.

Until our next project… Merry Christmas!
