Education has become a casualty of the war in Syria and Iraq, with an estimated 2.8 million Syrian children out of school and more than 60,000 in Erbil, Iraq alone. UNICEF estimates 1.5 million Iraqi children are already displaced with numbers rapidly increasing every day due to the battle to retake Mosul. Living in overcrowded camps with inadequate basic needs, children’s education is almost non-existent. Boredom and lack of safe spaces to play or learn put children at risk of kidnap, sexual exploitation and terrorist grooming, and destroys their future opportunities for development.
“I was six years old when the war in Syria started. Now I have been travelling from camp to camp for three years. It is hard to think about the future and hard to know what I am going to do. It is hard to pass the time in the camps with nothing to do.” Syrian boy 12 years old.
